LEIF ERIKSON - THE FIRST NORSE EXPLORER TO SET FOOT ON AMERICA

Happy 4th of July to our dear friends in America!
4th of July is marked on every American calendar as the day of Independence. The day when people celebrate their race, nationality, religion, customs and historical achievements that lead to the discovery of America. The remarkable celebrations on this day takes us back to the day when a young Viking explorer, Leif Erikson set foot on, what is now called America.

No wonder on how did the Viking culture dug its roots in America. Viking culture was no doubt rich in antiques, such as Viking jewelry that consisted of Viking rings, Viking bracelets and Viking arm rings. The Viking culture adopted by modern-day Vikings originate to the first Norse explorer, Leif Erikson, who first discovered America.

To dig in depth of the Viking culture, it is important travel back in time, when a Viking explorer set his foot on America. Before the Viking age, it is crucial to know about the man who set the pillars of the Viking culture.

 

LEIF ERIKSON- THE FIRST VIKING EXPLORER TO SET FOOT ON AMERICA

 

SYPNOSIS

Leif Erikson was the son of Erick the red, who found the first European settlement, which is now known as Greenland. Leif Erikson is said to have sailed to Norway to a King, where he converted Leif's religion to Christianity. During his way back to Greenland, he is said to have landed at a place, which is now called North American continent.  He found a region there, that he called Vinland. After staying at Vinland for winters, he never returned to the North American shores and spent rest of his life in Greenland, where he promoted the religion, Christianity.

LEIF ERIKSON'S EARLY LIFE AND HIS CONVERSION TO CHRISTIANITY

Leif Erikson was the son of Erik the red, who found a European settlement, Greenland after his banishment from Iceland. There is no certain date in the record, which states as the birth date of the brave Viking explorer, Leif. He spent his childhood in Greenland. After growing up, it is said that Leif had sailed to Norway in 1000 AD. The Norwegian king at that time, Olaf I Tryggvason is believed to have Leif's religion converted into Christianity and then sent him back to Greenland to spread the religion.

ERIKSON'S VOYAGE TO VINLAND

There are many controversies regarding the Erikson's voyage to Vinland. According to the Erik's saga, Leif sailed off course to return to Greenland but, ended up setting foot on America. The region which he discovered had abundance of wild grapes and the land was fertile enough. That is why, he named the region Vinland. He had earlier heard about this undiscovered region from an Icelandic trader, Bjarni Herjulfsson.  He stayed in Vinland for winters and then sailed off course to return to Greenland. He is never said to have visited the North American continent after that day. Though, there are many debates and conflicts regarding this event, as there is not ample evidence to prove his voyage.

ERIKSON'S LATER LIFE IN GREENLAND

After returning to Greenland, he confronted with his father about Christianity upon which, his father became angry. But, his mother eagerly accepted the new faith and also found a Christian church at Brattahild, Greenland. After his father died, Leif took over his father's designation and worked as a chief of the Greenland settlement. Nothing much is known about Leif's descendants but his son, Thorkel took over the position, after Leif Erikson's death.

FINAL WORDS

During the beginning of late 19th century, many Nordic Americans celebrated Leif Erikson as the first European explorer to set foot on America. In 1925, when the Norwegians celebrated the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Norwegian group in United States, the President, Calvin Coolidge announced Leif Erikson as the first man to have explored North America. Furthermore, in 1964, the President, Lyndon B. Jhonson declared 9th of October as the Leif Erikson's day.
